I'm going to write a blog entry about myself damnit and I don't care who thinks less of me for it!!
(I'm not serious, by the way - apparently some people get annoyed when people write blog entries about their stupid lives, which I understand to an extent, but I gotta vent somewheres!)
so a while ago I decided my website needed a facelift since it has had the same mediocre layout for the past several months, and whipped up a little something something in Photoshop. I thought it was a work of art at the time, loved it, fired up dreamweaver and went to town. well, the layout turned out all right, most everything seems to work OK - but a month (or two?) later I have come to my senses. It is hideous.
I have made a new, much better, much more sleek and much more SIMPLE layout today however - it can be seen here. I like it. and the best part -- it is so simple that all it takes is a few divs and some css and I got it done. The nice people at Codingforums.com helped me figure out padding issues with my text. Everything is good. hooray.
But then I thought... things have gone good so far... set up a php news program! you know, the kind you log into and post news entries with the click of a button? why hadn't I thought of this before!
oh wait, I had. and I now remember, after spending an hour uploading all of the necessary files and CHMODing them, downloading two FTP clients because apparently I don't have one and the first one (coffeecup) was shat, that the stupid effing thing spits out a "POWERED BY XPRESSION NEWS" blip with each news entry, and you cannot disable that unless you pay $25 through some shifty paypal-like money transfer system.
at this point I had to find a big rubber band to secure my dropped jaw to the rest of my head, because that is a huge deal to me. it looks so UGLY to have "THIS WAS NOT MADE BY THE PERSON USING IT" on every news entry! what ever happened to letting people credit you on a separate credits page?! when I ran ezdesign's banner request forum, I never once required a link back to me or my website or anything. and those were personal requests!
(by the way this little bit about the credit showing was at the very bottom of the README.txt file, after it gives instructions on how to install.)
so basically I'm wondering now if I should just live with the credit showing up since I put so much effort into setting it up, but I may not have a choice. you see, the login page will not work. I've e-mailed the programmer of this little scripty doodle but if I don't get an answer soon it is right back to trusty div news entries by hand!
too bad, too. I was looking forward to being able to categorize them.
