The seventh harry potter book cover was released today.
this is very exciting. I instantly snapped into a good mood after seeing this. OK, now I will draw attention and add my thoughts to different elements of this cover, stop reading now if you haven't read all of the books.

- where are their wands, first of all? voldemort and harry are seen here, gesturing with their hands at things in the sky. I wonder perhaps if this is a new form of magic. Jo sprung horcruxes on us in book six and they instantly became a very important piece of the plot, so it wouldn't be too shocking if the final showdown was fought with a new magic style. after all, harry and big V can't use their wands against each other because of the priori incantatem stuff.
- where ARE they? the sky is orange. the time of day is either sunrise or sunset unless they are in some strange location not on earth. I have wondered since book 5 if the veil in the Ministry leads to limbo (a place between heaven and hell - some think this is where we go when we die, and then later we are judged), and that magic works differently there maybe - hence the lack of wands. so this could be the place beyond the veil (notice the ragged curtains on either side? although I think all of the book covers have curtains...?). however, this would require a way to get back out of the veil, and if there was a way I think Sirius would have found it. I do not think it is likely that this setting is beyond the veil, personally.
however, it must be somewhere entirely new. what's with the wall? it looks like a coliseum at first glance. I thought of Rome instantly. this surely does not take place at Hogwarts, there is nowhere like that on the grounds. Hmm. This was drawn this way to get us to think, I'm sure, just like we thought when the book six cover was released and the same with book five, etc. In fact, now that I think about it - we didn't know of the settings of the covers of book five OR six until the book was read. so maybe it is pointless to speculate.
- Harry is wearing something around his neck. It looks maybe like a pouch but I think it is the locket horcrux.
- There are people watching. Who are they? Death Eaters? Dementors? Surely dementors would not be out frolicking about in broad daylight, so possibly death eaters, and maybe a mix of DEs and OotP members? I don't know. that would seem a tad cheesy to have everyone watching and cheering on. I had hoped the final battle would be more like, Harry vs. V in some dark spooky place. that would make things seem more serious.
- Their clothing. They are wearing the same color cloaks. Why? V loves black, I would expect to see him in black.
My opinion: I don't like it very much. It's just OK. I was wishing it would show how serious this book is going to be, this just looks.... odd?
